Following Directions involves the understanding of basic concepts as well as the processing and retaining of incoming information in order to carry out a given task. The child’s verbal working memory is thus a crucial aspect of their ability to follow instructions and commands accurately. The ability to follow directions is a crucial skill for both classroom performance and functioning in everyday contexts. Children who have difficulty following directions are likely to be at risk of lower academic performance compared to their peers (Mindwell, 2014). Difficulties following instructions in the classroom is likely to impact on the child’s ability to perform successfully and can hinder their learning. It may also lead to difficulties socially if the children are not able to keep up and / or follow along with their peers.
Grammar encompasses the rules of language that govern the structure of words, phrases and sentences. Children need to both understand and master grammar in their own language in order to communicate effectively.
Learning the appropriate grammatical structures of words and sentences helps us to become more effective in our communication. If grammatical difficulties are identified, it is important to seek advice from a Speech Pathologist to determine if intervention is necessary. A recent study provided evidence that expressive grammar intervention is associated with accelerated development in grammar skills for preschoolers with Specific Language Impairment (Washington & Warr-Leeper 2013).
Difficulties with grammar can impact on the child’s ability to express themselves accurately and effectively in the classroom environment.
