Phonological Awareness / Early Literacy Difficulties

Phonological awareness skills refer to the ability to manipulate or play sounds in words, or “play” with sounds and words. Specifically this includes identifying the first and last sounds in words, breaking words up into syllables, blending syllables to form words, breaking up words into individual sounds, constructing words from individual sounds, rhyming and manipulating sounds within words. Strong phonological awareness skills provide children with the means of attacking new and unfamiliar words when reading and spelling.
